The Deleted City - A Map of the Vintage Internet Metropolis

Before there was Friendster, MySpace, Facebook and Foursquare there was GeoCities - a vast network of amateur websites, with animated GIFs and clipart, that were the hub of digital culture in the late-'90s. Yahoo bought it for $3.5b and closed it down about two years ago.

Richard Vijgen has plotted that data along a scrollable world map of all those ancient GeoCities. He's calling it The Deleted City, "a digital archaeology of the world wide web as it exploded into the 21st century." It lives as an interactive touchscreen data visualization.
